Moving to the new version
The new Talkey is a separate app – the original version does not update to it on its own. Moving takes a few minutes: you bring your key over from the old version to the new one, check that it works, and only then remove the old version. Your licence stays the same, there is nothing to buy again.
Before you start
- Install the new version: iPhone and iPad, Mac, Android, Windows. Keep the original version installed for now – your key is in it.
- Have your Talkey password ready – the one you unlock the original version with.
- There are two ways to bring the key over. We recommend a backup – besides moving the key you keep a file you can restore it from at any time. Transfer between devices is quicker and is handy especially on a phone.
Option 1: back up and restore (recommended)
In the original version – computer (Windows, Mac)
- Open My account and select the key under Decryption keys.
- Click the Back up icon.
- In the Backup decryption key window you can pick a folder with Select another location (the default is Documents\Talkey Backup), then click Next.
This creates a .bac file (e.g. john.smith@company.com(0430).bac). It is protected by your Talkey password. If you ticked Change password for backup, the password you entered for the backup applies instead.
In the original version – phone (iPhone, Android)
- On the home screen open Decryption keys and tap the key.
- Tap Backup to file/cloud.
- iPhone: in the share sheet choose Save to Files and pick a folder. Android: choose where to save the file (e.g. My Files or Google Drive).
In the new version
- Launch the new version. On How would you like to start? choose I have a key backup and tap Continue.
- Choose From a file and select the .bac file.
- Enter the backup password and tap Restore the keys.
- The wizard continues with connecting your mailbox – see After the key is moved.
More than one key (several e-mail addresses)? Restore the others under Keys → Restore from backup.
Business customers: if your key is backed up on Talkey Enterprise Server, choose From Talkey Enterprise Server instead of a file and follow the steps.
Option 2: transfer between devices
The key travels through the Talkey server, encrypted with a one-time code. The original and the new version can be on the same device or on two different ones.
- In the new version: on How would you like to start? choose I already have Talkey on another device, enter the e-mail address of the key and tap Request transfer.
- In the original version – computer: open My account → Decryption keys and click the Key transfer icon.
In the original version – phone: open Decryption keys and tap the key transfer icon in the bottom bar.
An eight-character code appears. It is valid for 15 minutes. - In the new version: type the code into Code from the other device, enter the Talkey password of the original version and confirm.
If the original version says there are no keys ready to transfer, finish step 1 in the new version first. Do not give the code to anyone.
After the key is moved
- Connect your mailbox. The wizard asks how encrypted messages should be sent – Talkey either hands them over to your mail app (Outlook, Apple Mail, Mail on iPhone…) or sends them directly through your mail server.
- Password: the new version is unlocked with the same password that protected the backup (for a transfer, the password of the original version). You can change it in Settings → Security.
- Check that the key works: in your mail, find an older message with a Talkey.mtm attachment and open the attachment in the new version. If the message shows up, you are done.
Why is the Inbox in the new version empty?
The key is moved, not the messages. Talkey does not download your mail – encrypted messages sit in your regular mailbox as a Talkey.mtm attachment and appear in Talkey once you open them. With the same key the new version opens all your older messages too.
Removing the original version
- Remove the original version only after you have checked that the new version opens an older message. Until then the key is only in the old one.
- Keep the backup file (.bac) in a safe place – it is the only way to restore the key if you lose your device. You can create a new backup at any time under Keys → Back up.
Want to keep both versions for a while?
You can, but a Talkey.mtm attachment opens in only one of them – the one your system is set to use. To change it:
- Windows: right-click the .mtm file → Open with → Choose another app → select Talkey and tick Always use this app.
- Mac: select the .mtm file in Finder → Get Info (⌘I) → Open with → choose the new Talkey → Change All…
What the new version does not include
- Microsoft Outlook integration (the Talkey button in Outlook) – messages are opened from the Talkey.mtm attachment.
- Encrypted disk.
- Shredder (secure file deletion).
If you need these features, you can keep using the original version.
